STORIES AND TALES

Every photograph begins long before the shutter is released.

Stories & Tales is an ongoing body of work that explores photography as a space for narrative rather than documentation. The images do not seek to explain, illustrate, or describe reality. Instead, they create moments of ambiguity—visual fragments suspended between memory and imagination, where the visible becomes a catalyst for stories that remain unwritten.

The project is rooted in the belief that every place carries invisible traces of those who have inhabited it. Landscapes, streets, interiors, and solitary figures become stages upon which time has quietly accumulated. Rather than revealing a definitive truth, each photograph invites the viewer to complete the image through personal experience, memory, and interpretation.

Working with natural light and an attentive observation of everyday life, Alessandro Banchelli transforms ordinary scenes into contemplative narratives. Silence, absence, and atmosphere become essential elements of the composition, allowing the photographs to exist beyond the instant they depict. They are less about what happened than about what might have happened—or what is still unfolding beyond the frame.

The title Stories & Tales reflects the dual nature of the work. A story belongs to lived experience; a tale belongs to imagination. The photographs inhabit the fragile space between the two, where documentary reality gradually dissolves into poetic possibility. They offer no beginning and no conclusion, only fragments that resist certainty and encourage a slower, more intimate act of looking.

Although created across different countries and cultures, the series is not concerned with geography itself. Places become emotional landscapes, detached from their specific context and transformed into universal metaphors for memory, solitude, longing, and human presence.

Positioned between documentary photography and visual fiction, Stories & Tales proposes photography as an open narrative—one that does not provide answers, but creates the conditions for stories to emerge. Each image is less a record of the world than an invitation to imagine it anew
